i don't care much about the maintenance of this blog and what i have written or what i am going to write in this blog, because it is merely a mean for me to share, complain, write or express personal view on anything i wish to tell but i couldn't have done so anywhere else, so i just write as i wish.....

be it sala speling, wrong vocob, ugly pic or somethong gela, it is my blok, but not any official website anyway.

other bloggers are perhaps more sophisticated than me, but i seriously don't know anyone or any online organisation whose role is to bring development to the country.

"they blog every day and night but have done nothing for the people. I challenge them. If they can produce at least 10 per cent of what salcra has done over the years, the I will consider them as genuine in helping the people."
said sarawak deputy chief minister dtkptr jabu, quoted in the front page of one local English paper.

i've heard politicians blogging, but not aware of any government being formed by bloggers whose duty is rural development.

no joke, some people, even rural development minister, could have serious mental problem!

如果他们可以做SALCRA(好像是负责土著土地发展的政府单位)过去做到的10%,林伯就罐他们真的帮助人民。”

i have wanted to write something about my Maldives' trip for the past weeks, but i have been really busy, yet diving in Maldives was really disappointing. and today, i read an email from a friend which was sent to me a while ago, which made me burst into laughter while working on some tedious translation work. so i decided take a break and share it here. and since i have finally realized how terrible my translation skills and writing skills are, this blog will be my practise ground from now onwards.

Hence, in the future, some or part (sensitive ones better in Chinese) of my stories will be written in both English and Chinese, or written in English and translated into Chinese, or vice versa here you go:

I was barely sitting down when I heard a voice from the other stall saying: "Hi, how are you?"

I'm not the type to start a conversation in the men's restroom but I don't know what got into me, so I answered, somewhat embarrassed, "doin just fine!"

And the other guy said, "so, what are you up to?"

What kind of question is that? At that point, I'm thinking this is too bizarre so I answered, “UUhh! I'm like you, just travelling!"

At this point, I was just trying to get out as fast as I could when I heard another question, "can i come over? "

Ok, This question is too weird for me but I figured i could just be polite and end the conversation. So I tell him, "No..... I am a little busy right now!!!!"

Then I heard the guy said nervously.....

"Listen. I'll have to call you back. There's an idiot in the other stall who keeps answering all my questions!!!!"

the most popular mongolian in malaysia

i have never met any Mongolian in my life. but i have the perception that Mongolian girls are tall and pretty, but too bad the only one known to all Malaysians was a dead one. everyone knows how to pronounce her name properly, even my old illiterate grandmother know how to spell the name of "altantuya".

Her brutal murder was still a myth with much speculations, and there is an clear indication of political influence/ interference over her case involving many atas people in malaysia following malaysiatoday's another revelation recently.

even though raja petra was detained under ISA, malaysiatoday still able to update/ reveal the abuse of power by dpm. text messages transmitted between Najib's personal mobile phone (+6012 2143177) and Shafee's mobile phone (+6012 3257052)was published, also carried by many websites and bloggers.

as usual, mainstream media will not report the news until najib's official response to it.

malaysiakini reported that anti-Najib banners have sprung up in some parts of the city, but najib's supporters deny the latest news could have any effect on his upcoming unmo presidency campaign.

Malaysiakini also quoted a long-time close supporter saying that they were not bothered at all, and all these allegations was obviously intended to sabotage najib, "but he is riding a wave of popularity now. I don't think Umno members have much choice anyway."

i just wonder, what will happen next? will najib swear again like he did previously? or another round of tangkapan under ISA????

time to go diving

all my friends know i am going to Maldives end of the month. that's why i cannot afford to go diving even though it might be the last dive of the year before the season opens again next year, simply because the cost to dive and/or to take my advance course in Maldives is really expensive.

when i failed to perform my work as usual and dressed like auntie, K.L. was indeed right, i have been absence from diving for too long.

yes, it is true that i throw money into the sea. well, at least it is much better to spend xx millions to send an escort to the moon.

Malaysia's "worst in the world" taxis

I do love Malaysia. But this report from AFP is damn true.

Malaysia's 'worst in the world' taxis tarnish national image

The ads promoting "Malaysia: Truly Asia" aim to welcome visitors with a warm smile to a prosperous and modern nation, so the taxi fleet branded "the worst in the world" can come as a bit of a shock.

Complaints about taxis are common in many countries, but in Malaysia it has escalated to an outpouring of frustration, on blog sites and in letters to newspapers.

In a survey by the local magazine The Expat, some 200 foreigners from 30 countries rated Malaysia the worst among 23 countries in terms of taxi quality, courtesy, availability and expertise.

The respondents lashed the fleet as "a source of national shame" and "a serious threat to tourists -- rude bullies and extortionists".

Abdul Razak, operations manager for Dubai-based Citicab which launched here in January, said that even in poorer nations such as Thailand and Indonesia, taxis are smarter and the drivers far more courteous.

"I would say it is the worst in this region, undoubtedly. I have travelled to all countries in this region and our company operates taxis in many parts of the world. The situation here is the worst I have seen," he told AFP.

"The vehicles are in shabby condition, the driver will take you if he likes your face -- that is, if he agrees with where you want to go for the price he insists on."

The government has called on taxi firms to lift their standards, but various campaigns have achieved little, and many blame the lack of enforcement on rampant corruption in the police and bureaucracy.

keep to your words, say no to ISA

i really dunno what will happen after 916.

but i sincerely hope that the new government(if it really happens) will keep to their words and abolish ISA.

it is not internal security act, it is " insane siawnang act"

to my foreign friends outside malaysia, this is what happened in malaysia:

The arrest of blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin under the Internal Security Act (ISA) Friday afternoon should serve as a warning to irresponsible bloggers who flout the law, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He said many bloggers might be thinking that they could get away from facing the ISA if their blogs were based overseas and therefore not subjected to this country’s laws.

“It is not appropriate that the ISA is only been used against Raja Petra while the other irresponsible bloggers are free to do as they please,” he told reporters at Kampung Sungai Burung, here Friday.

other than a blogger, a politician was also arrested under ISA because of some statement made by someone else.

the worst thing is, a reporter was detained under ISA because she reported a racist remark by a UMNO leader truthfully. fortunately, she was released after, authority said the arrest was meant to protect her because she reported some racist remark, but the one who was guilty of saying such racist remark was left unprotected.

ISA in malaysia is used to stop bloggers from blogging, accuse politicians of some fabricated issues, and to protect reporters????? funny

the typical ahmad in malaysia society

back from diving

thanks to my few only loyal reader(s) for following up on my blog and keep reminding me that i haven't update my blog for more than a month.
for a moment I really forget totally about my blog after i start using facebook. i am so sala, this is MY blog, i have yet fulfill my goal yet, how could i abandon it. I won't.

had been really busy for the past month, after my grandmother passed away, i did some research on the birth of Malaysia and wrote some great articles (as least i do think so), and went diving quite regularly, and yes... i start drinking again, with a bunch of diving buddies and now addicted to facebook, sharing our wonderful moments from diving.

meanwhile, been quite busy at work also, all ministers seemed to have too many functions squeezed into the month of August before Ramadan. Apart of telling the difference between 831 and 916, have to listen to these old folks' same old rubbish some more.

the good news is, i just came back from a wonderful diving/ fun trip in kk, a really meaningful volunteer project, reef cleaning. Sept is even a busier month for DIvingVIva, i have officially take up another part time job, promoting my translation service online aggressively, take any project available, just to save more money for my next trip..... my very first time

my buddy bought a camera casing during the recent DIveExpo. but he has no camera yet. i have no casing but i offer to borrow a camera (G9)

so, we have a deal. I borrow a G9, and make use of his casing, so we can both try to take underwater photography, while taking each other's picture.

our first dive, he started with the camera first, he took a shot of me clearing mask (my oni pic), then he passed the camera to me. I have problem controlling my bouyancy with one hand, while holding the camera with the other hand, and i don't have the third hand to snap the shot.

i took few pics, hardly promising.

soon after, the battery went flat. i realize i forgot to charge battery pack, nor bringing extra battery with me. that's it for our first underwater photography session. short and SWEET!

my buddy only managed to take my mask-clearing pic and the tail of a blue-spotted stringray.

it's also ah huan first time there at samatan. but i can only take ah huan's pic using my handphone.

Sipadan WONDERFUL DIVE 08 (2)

Sipadan WONDERFUL DIVE 08 (1)

after much partying & soaking in alcohol, and walked away with a different slipper (one side oni)in the muddy rainforest music festival, DivingViva is finally back to normal track - diving n blogging.

when everything seems extremely boring, everybody seems equally annoying, life is meaningless and sex is nothing..... i know it is time to go diving.

here are some of the feature articles from my recent Sipadan trip. even thinking about it cheer me up.

CLIMATE TO IMPACT CORAL FISHES

Over four thousand species of fish live in or around coral reefs – and for many of them, their life depends critically on the health of the corals

Climate change is likely to have significant impact on the world’s beautiful coral reef fishes and will increase the risk of fishery collapses, a new scientific study warns.

The report by researchers of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies in the international journal Fish and Fisheries says that the vulnerability of corals to climate change impacts also extends to the many species of fish which depend on coral reefs for food, shelter or reproduction.

“Over four thousand species of fish live in or around coral reefs – and for many of them, their life depends critically on the health of the corals,” says lead author Dr Philip Munday.

“We have already seen episodes of mass die-off of corals as a result of warmer waters associated with global warming. The problem for specialist coral fishes is that when the corals die, the fish have nowhere else to go. Other kinds of fish live more independently, but depend on reefs for shelter in the juvenile stage of their life.”

when corals die, the fish have nowhere else to go.

As coral communities become less healthy, so too do the fish communities. A loss of diversity in corals due to bleaching and other impacts is also likely to lead to a loss in diversity among the coral fishes which inhabit them, the researchers say.

Like the corals themselves, coral fishes appear to prefer a temperature-stable environment and heating of the water may affect them in unpredictable ways. For instance, he says, warmer water may lead to higher survival rates in baby fish – but it could equally send a signal to adults to stop breeding, as reproduction is often governed by water conditions. Recent research has shown that some species might grow more slowly if temperatures go above their preferred range.

“There are still many unknowns and uncertainties in this area, which has not so far been widely studied – but the bottom line is that managing coral reef fisheries on which people depend for their livelihoods to ensure they are sustainable is going to become a lot more challenging and uncertain,” Dr Munday says.

An estimated 200 million people worldwide derive their livelihoods and a major source of sustenance from coral reefs. In Australia a $5bn tourism industry depends significantly on visitors being able to view corals and their colourful fish.

The problem stems in part from the fact that when many coral fish breed, their eggs are swept out to sea, and the baby fish then swim back and resettle on the reef. If reefs have been extensively damaged or the composition of their corals altered due to global warming impacts, this process of re-stocking the reefs with fish may be disrupted. At the same time, the baby fish are likely to be affected by changes in water temperature and the acidification of the oceans

“It is very likely that some coral reef fish populations will migrate as the sea water becomes warmer in the higher latitudes. This may mean the appearance of tropical fishes in places which currently have few or none.

“However in the case of the Great Barrier Reef the problem is that there are no suitable shallow structures on which reefs can form off its southern end. This means there is really nowhere for coral reefs and their associated fish communities to expand. Effectively, this means that some coral reef fish species will be squeezed by rising water temperatures into smaller and smaller areas, making them more susceptible to disturbances such as coral bleaching and increasingly vulnerable to fishing and other forms of human activity.”

As to simply heading deeper, into cooler water, Dr Munday says that while coral reef fish do sometimes go deep, mostly they prefer the sunlit waters of the surface where the food supply is greatest, and tend to observe fairly strict depth boundaries.

“There are critical gaps in our understanding of how the tropical ocean will change over the coming century, especially at regional and local scales. There are even larger gaps in our understanding of how rapid changes in the ocean climate will affect reef fishes at the individual, population and community levels. These knowledge gaps introduce a high level of uncertainty to many of our assessments. Nevertheless, our synthesis identifies areas of major concern regarding the possible effects of climate change on coral reef fishes,” the authors of the paper say.

“Climate change and the future for coral reef fishes” appears in Fish and Fisheries 9 of 2008 and is co-authored by Dr Philip Munday, Professor Geoff Jones, Dr Morgan Pratchett and Dr Ashley Williams of CoECRS and James Cook University.

As coral communities become less healthy, so too do the fish communities. A loss of diversity in corals due to bleaching and other impacts is also likely to lead to a loss in diversity among the coral fishes which inhabit them, the researchers say

Some guy bought a new fridge for his house. To get rid of his old fridge,
he put it in his front yard and hung a sign on it saying: 'Free to take
home. You want it, you take it.' For three days the fridge sat there
without even one person looking twice at it. He eventually decided that
people were too un-trusting of this deal.. It looked to good to be true, so
he changed the sign to read: 'Fridge for sale Rm50.00' The next day someone
stole it.

petrol stations on strike?

Malaysia petrol stations on strike?

rumours spread like wildfire (一发不可收拾)this evening, at the very beginning, saying that Petronas petrol station will not accept credit cards from tomorrow onwards, an hour later the story "upgrade", becomes "petrol stations on strike and all closed tomorrow. "

as a result, many kiasu people rushed to petrol stations to fill up their tanks and caused terrible traffic jams, just like the day when our BELOVED pm announced the fuel hike. many other people saw the jam, and afraid of another round of fuel hike and joined the queqe.

before several attempts to confirm the accuracy of the credit card thing and the so-called strike (which operators and authority rebuke the rumour at the end), i personally don't think it can be true.

operators have been fighting for more commission, stop credit card transaction does make sense, in order to save the service charge on top of the little income as they claim. but this obviously can't be the valid reason to cause panic. soon enough, on strike version of "rumour" starts spreading.

i personally don't believe, as my past 20-ish year living in Malaysia, i have never heard of anything like on strike. with great Asian values, people normally bitch and curse at the back, but hardly speak up and ask for what they want as a whole. more importantly, all these operators are businessmen, who can guarantee their loss/ gain, oppose to their personal greed, if they go on stike.

however, after the political tsunami in malaysia's general election this year, what seems impossible ought to be possible and workable. what will happen is really unpredictable (though i still don't believe the on strike story as few operators told me personally there is no such thing).

anyway, who knows what the govt will announce again .... as a young and energetic fellow, i find it difficult to cope with the govenment's ever-changing fluctuating policies. can't belive these grey-hair belly-bouncing fellows are actually more innovative and adaptive than i do.

well, if this is merely rumour, who started this, and what's the motive behind? if this turns out to be true(who knows)......

Final Divetination --- Murder under the water

my very caring editor incidentally asked me to flip through one of the local daily newspapers, and deliberately focus on a page with catchy lead "husband murdered wife during honeymoon dive."

well, i guess all my collegues well aware of my hobby and sincerely care about my safety, but prefer to advise indirectly through another medium.

It was said that the husband suspected of turning off the wife's oxygen tank, and get huge sum of insurance money after her death. So, lesson learnt, never stay in front or below your hubbie when you go scuba diving, u never know what they will do to your tank. (should try and see whether it is really possible)

Off course, I don't know the real story. I rather it is some kind of supernatural thing, what do you thing?

23, June SYDNEY, Australia (AP)- A Birmingham, Alabama man has been charged with murder in Australia for allegedly drowning his wife during a honeymoon dive on the Greet Barrier Reef.

Police are preparing a warrant for the arrest of the suspect, David Gabriel Watson, who faces a maximum penalty of life in prison if convicted of murder.

The suspect was not present in court and his exact whereabouts were unclear.

The charge was formally made by a coroner in Sydney, Australie who conducted a months-long inquest into whether there were suspicious circumstances in the death of 26-year-old Christina Mae "Tina" Watson on Oct. 22, 2003.

She drowned while diving on a historic shipwreck near the northeastern city of Townsville as her husband of 11 days looked on.

An autopsy found no pre-existing medical condition that could have explained Tina Watson's death. Tests showed there was nothing wrong with her diving gear.

i heard about this, but last saturday at serikin market, i finally saw it for the first time. and surprisingly, there are quite a number of people who are willing to pay, for a 2 to 5 cm long leach (RM10 each)to suck their blood. according to them, this is one the best, yet natural, ancient healthy therapies available, it sucks the useless blood away. after one hour of therapy, (just leave the worn on your knee or foot whersoever),enjoy its bites on and off, it will become double the original size, i.e. from 5cm to 10cm long or more, and it is good for a week.

i am not quite sure about paying to be sucked. if it sucks fat rather blood, i will definitely be the first to line up.

many things to buy at Serikin, just beware of expensive GuRci or fake antiques.

Cycling to work, working to dive?

Effective tonight, petrol will be 78 sen higher for every litre.Diesel RM1 more for each litre. follow by electricity tariffs increase 20%.

i am not surprise if Laksa Auntie will increase the price of her laksa again tomorrow, just like what she did few months ago, when chicken and pork's price soaring a while ago.
(eventhough there is little chicken floss and no pork in laksa).

yesterday morning, when friends and colleagues asked me what is the latest update on the fuel price, i told them what i read from paper, it is likely to increase up to 50% or more, but only will be implemented in August.

the response is, we all have to save money to buy bicycle soon. later around 5pm, i was told pm is going to hold a press conference annoucing the new subsidy fuel price, but east malaysia will be exempted!!!!!

an hour later, the shocking news was confirmed (no privilege for east malaysians), so as the need to buy a bicycle. but, just not enough time to look for a suitable and cheap 2nd hand bike, as everyone was rushing to the petrol stations.

I am so happy that i had just filled my tank in the afternoon. when everyone was talking about the price, transportation cost,....where to buy cheap bike, when to start cycling to work ..... bla bla bla ..... but all i think about is the cost to go scuba diving. (i know...)

with the fuel hike, transportation cost to go scuba diving, (car + boat) will increase as well, which makes this costly sport even more expensive now.

i am pretty sure the cost i save on fuel every month can pay for my trip to go diving. but i am not sure whether cycling to work will effect my performance, or punctuality to every assignment, and eventually loss my job. and without my job, i cannot even pay for Laksa Auntie's rip off!!!

all malaysians, especially hard core divers, are in deep trouble now!

2008 International Year of the Reef

DivingViva learnt from a magazine that 2008 is the designated International Year of the Reef on her recent diving trip.

The good news is, Malaysia has few well known diving sites, takes Sipadan for example, is always ranked as the world's top 10 diving paradise. (DivingViva had just visited there and proud to tell you this, it is definitely a MUST DIVE place for all divers.)

All Malaysians should be proud of this in no doubt. The Malaysia first million dollar astronaut, pardon me, don't even mention it outside of Malaysia, especially our neighboring country (you-know-who) if you do not wish further harassment.

According to the authority, Malaysia marked its milestone in history (and showing off to the rest of the world) by sending their very first astronaut to the space. They spent millions to send someone UP escorting others to the space, but couldn't care less to spend money DOWN here to protect our precious marine life, which is essentially every Malaysian's asset to be proud of.

To some, perhaps million dollar astronaut is good looking and the role model for many students. But sorry to say, to DivingViva, even the ugliest stone fish is much more worth admiring than this million dollar astronaut.

Oh ya, back to the International Year of the Reef, and here come the bad news, according to the magazine, Malaysia's reef is at critical stage, whereas about 42%of Malaysia's reefs are under threat.

The main reasons include destructive fishing methods (blast fishing, cyanide fishing, deep-water trawling), overfishing, pollution runoff, sedimentation, climate change ans mass coral bleaching. (DivingViva will come to the details of each in the next article)

The magazine also suggests divers to dive responsibly. DivingViva do agree that ALL divers shall play their roles of not touching any corals, and not causing any pollution or disturbance to the marine life.

However, stricter rules should be imposed, not only upon divers, but also to those greater Threats like fishing, construction, or any other destructive activities.

Being one of the world's top diving spots with diverse coral reefs and dazzling wealth of undersea life, it sounds a solid reason all Malaysians should be proud of.

The ICRI International Year of the Reef 2008 is a worldwide campaign to raise awareness about the value and importance of coral reefs and threats to their sustainability, and to motivate people to take action to protect them. Visit
